In case you missed it last night the soccer subreddit completed a hostile takeover of the football subreddit. Waging their 1500+ subscribers over football’s measly 143, members of the soccer subreddit, acting on the orders of quelar, began their invasion yesterday afternoon.
By downvoting American football stories and frenetically posting any material they could find in the way of soccer stories, the barrage of hooligan redditors quickly conquered the frontpage. Normal users of the football subreddit were left in disarray trying to figure out what happened. In the confusion the soccer subredditors began directing them to a newly created “americanfootball” subreddit.
What subreddit rightfully belongs to who? American football users argue that they’re the “real football” but who’s to say Aussie Rules Football or even Gaelic Football couldn’t make the same claim?
For the time being it looks like soccer has won this war. They boast over ten times as many subscribers and also have the more popular game the world over. The only hope for American Football redditors is if the sole moderator for the Football subreddit returns. Sadly though it seems like he hasn’t logged on in over a year.
